In December 2007, the Greek Scientific Society Microbiokosmos (MBK) was founded in Athens by a group of researchers leading by Nikos Kyrpides, Kostas Bourtzis and Kostas Drainas. MikroBioKosmos' aims are a) to promote research in Microbial Ecology, Environmental Microbiology, Microbial Genomics, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics by facilitating the transfer of research knowledge and the communication among researchers, b) to stimulate State and public awareness regarding microbial resources and their exploitation, c) to promote biotechnological achievements and innovative products of national interest, and d) to ensure the protection and conservation of microbial resources in Greece.
